The tech-tree features carrier-based fighters. This is because, as an island nation, Japan’s military might was heavily based around its fleet. The first Japanese plane – the Farman biplane, was built in 1910. The first Navy plane took to the air soon after in 1912. In fact, during the first half of the 20th century, aviation was not even treated as a separate branch of the Japanese military forces. This meant that the Army and the Navy competed with each other for glory, and that strategic bombing and air defence was completely the responsibility of the Navy.
Japanese pilots were known for their aggression; many even carried a samurai sword with them into combat mission. Their lightweight, mobile and well-armed fighter planes were well suited to meet their needs and were rightly feared by their enemies.
The Japanese tier I plane will be a light fighter called the Nakajima Type 91. After it come nine legendary naval fighters of the Japanese Imperial Navy Air Force, including the Mitsubishi A6M Zero and the fast-speed interceptor Mitsubishi J4M1, a plane with a very unusual design. There are also three variants of the famous Kyushu J7W fighter to play around with.
