 Following the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940, during which over 300,000 soldiers were rescued from the beaches of France and certain death, Winston Churchill delivered a speech in the House of Commons. “We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air.” Exemplifying Britain’s ‘Dunkirk spirit’, the speech rallied a nation against tyranny and oppression, and rekindled morale and hope in a time of despair.
