We’re happy to announce the next update for World of Warplanes! Version 1.1 has arrived and brings a lot of fresh new content to the game that is sure to keep you busy over the holidays. Download the new version here.
Our first big update after release marks the arrival of a major extension to the German tech tree. The new Focke-Wulf aircraft complement the existing German planes nicely and provide a great alternative to the already-familiar Messerschmitt fighters. Whether it’s the classic Tier II Heinkel He 51 bi-plane (one of the first two Heinkel planes in the game) or the futuristic blueprint-only Tier X Fw 252 jet, the Focke-Wulf branch is sure to have an exciting candidate for everybody.

You asked for new terrain to fly your plane over and the developers have delivered! Update 1.1 sees the introduction of two new maps, Adriatic and Fortress, that will both stun you visually and have you rejoicing over the fun gameplay that they bring to the table.
Adriatic plunges you into the beautiful atmosphere of a small coastal town on the Adriatic Sea. Beautiful beaches give way to steep cliffs that lead to a picturesque plateau on which the city sits. Fly further north and you’ll discover a multifaceted relief of hills that go all the way up to a snow-capped mountain.
Fortress on the other hand offers a much flatter surface whose even expanse is broken towards the centre by a symmetrical formation of huge rocks that tower over the rest of the land. Surrounded by a curving river, this massive landmark lays the foundation for a historic fortress that overlooks the valley below. A small town in the background, moving targets and fierce battle activity on the ground round out the scenery nicely and make for exciting gameplay.
New premium plane Me 209 V4. |
Another highlight of the new version is the introduction of five new Tier V premium planes. Among the arrivals are four classics that long-time World of Warplanes veterans will recognise from the Beta testing days. The sturdy attack aircraft IL-2 (mod), the ‘Soviet Kittyhawk’ P-40 M-105, as well as the carrier-based American XF4U-1, all celebrate their comeback in a new and rebalanced version.
You can also discover the newcomer, the German Me 209 V4 – probably the most interesting-looking fighter in our roster since the Vought V-173 “Flying Pancake”.
Everybody who feels that they’ve “been there, done that” can now look forward to a new set of challenges. Version 1.1 introduces a total of 11 new achievements that are split into different classes for air-to-air takedowns and ground target destruction. If you want to push yourself even further, there are also three new epic achievements that you can add to your medal collection.
The new Fw 159 cruising on the redesigned ‘Harbor’ map. |
Aside from all the novelties, the designers also spent some time retouching the existing content. The map ‘Harbor’ has been redesigned and now features a richer landscape with more activity on the ground. Climbing and diving have been made easier thanks to a new steering algorithm. The sometimes sluggish camera inversion on the standard controls has been addressed and can now be regulated using a new slider in the options menu.
Most importantly though, balancing changes have been made to try and reduce the supremacy of high-altitude aircraft. The noticeable advantage that high-fliers had when attacking from above should be smoothed out a bit by the increased manoeuvrability of low-profile planes that comes with Version 1.1. Pilots that are attacked closer to the ground will now have more ways to evade the enemy and strike back.
