It was exactly today, seventy-five years ago, on 2 October 1939 that the first prototype of the now-legendary IL-2 took to the air for the first time. Back then, Sergey Ilyushin’s masterpiece was still called TsKB-55 (that’s the Tier IV BSh-2 in-game) and would take another two iterations before it passed state trials and began shipping under its designers name as Ilyushin IL-2 in April 1941. The rest, as they say, is history. The aircraft went on to become the single most-produced warplane of WWII and is still to this day very dear to the hearts of many Soviet aviation fans across the world.
