Pilots,
As you know, the earliest planes in World of Warplanes stem from the 1930s. This is largely because we chose to focus our game on aircraft of the WWII era – the golden age of military aviation. However, this does not mean that there weren’t any great air battles before that time. WWI saw its fair share of air encounters, of which none were bigger than the Battle of Saint-Mihiel, whose story we want to share with you today. Grab extra XP and delicious discounts on select German and American planes in honour of this unforgettable occasion!

The Battle of Saint-Mihiel, which took place from 12-16 September 1918, turned out to be one of the most significant engagements of WWI. From the Allies’ perspective, its goal was to overrun the Saint-Mihiel salient – a V-shaped German defence line that surrounded the fortified city of Metz and blocked all rail transport between Paris and the embattled Western Front.
The battle was interesting in several ways. It was the first time that the American Expeditionary Force (AEF), led by General John J. Pershing, mounted and executed an independent offensive. Up until this point, American forces had seen battle only as a portion of larger British or French armies. Saint-Mihiel became therefore the first big test for the Americans on French soil.
Secondly, Saint-Mihiel was also the greatest air battle of WWI. The Allies mustered a total of 1,476 air planes against an estimated defence of 500 German aircraft. This constituted the largest assembly of aircraft that the world had ever seen.
Lastly, it is the outcome of the battle which made this event so significant. Thanks to a brilliant combination of forces, using tanks, infantry, artillery strikes and support from the air, the Allies managed to liberate Saint-Mihiel and the surrounding area from German occupation in a mere two days. This freed up strategically important transportation pathways and allowed the AEF to concentrate their attention further south near the Argonne Forest where they combined with British and French troops and continued to push back the Germans.
This decisive victory gave a major boost to the young American forces and put the Germans on the defensive, leading to the end of WWI only a couple of months later.
How about playing some battles in those bi-planes to commemorate the occasion, pilots?
