The Silver Wing Tournament finals took place on Friday 24th of May. This first big Wargaming tournament on World of Warplanes proved to be an outstanding success! 47 teams signed up with a total of 188 beta testers participating. The players took their chances at this double elimination tournament and played in several days of breathtaking aerial battles, commented live by Simon “Bump” Bennett and Piotr “0xyde” Pilich.
In this tournament, the teams were composed of 4 players each with a total of 22 tier points to spend on planes of Tiers I – VI. In this recap, we present the last and probably most exciting match of the day! The full bracket of the tournament is available for your convenience, which may help you understand the mechanism behind the double elimination system.
The final match was played on the Pacific Ocean map between the winner of the winners bracket (a team which won all their matches before) and the winner of the losers’ bracket (a team who lost one match before and thus got dropped to the loser’s bracket). The final was played in the Best of Five mode in which the team who wins three battles wins the match. Is everything clear? Good, start your engines!
First game. OM started the game putting out ground targets with their Me 410, whilst NRG utilised rockets from their F4U for the same purpose. After the initial ground targets destruction, the teams engaged in the NE corner near the volcano. The planes started circling each other, losing altitude quickly while performing evasive manoeuvers. After a short moment filled with tracers, NRG was left in favourable 2 vs. 1 situation. After that, the two remaining NRG pilots just needed to spray the sky with their guns and moved the match score to 1:0!
Second game. Both teams moved towards the west from the beginning of the battle, which led to a very quick engagement. The tight dogfight at cloud level caused the planes to fall down extremely fast. Pulling up quickly proved once again to be a great tactic for escaping from heavier planes. The heavy fighter from OM couldn’t keep up and was eventually destroyed at low altitude. NRG once again proven superiority over OM, bringing the score to 2:0 and casting a shadow over any chance for an OM victory in this tournament!
Third game. Both teams went straight for a direct engagement in the northern part of the map. OM picked off several ground targets on the way to get the superiority counter working in their favour! The NRG team didn’t play as successfully in this engagement, losing all except one plane during the head-on and first turnaround. The final plane tried to desperately pull up and lose the OM pilots. But they didn’t give up, instead boosting their engines and managing to stay on target long enough to knock the last NRG plane out of the sky! The score moved to 2:1 still in favour of NRG.
Fourth game. Both teams moved to the SW corner and engaged at high altitudes, flying right above the biggest island. Both teams engaged head-on once again, this time without a single plane lost during the first fly-by. Just seconds later, two NRG planes fell down to the sea as OM pilots managed to turn around faster and fired upon the defenseless rear of the planes. NRG again tried to perform an evasive manoeuver straight into the clouds, but that was not enough to escape the other fighters. OM once again displayed an amazing skill level and brought down the entire NRG team without a single loss, bringing the score up to 2:2!
Fifth and last battle of the match! The teams once again headed to the high altitude to fight in between the clouds, ignoring ground targets in favour of not letting the enemy spot their positions. The engagement started above the west island with the planes flying into the dogfight in a tight formation. As the teams performed a huge chase of each other up to the clouds, OM got the shorter end of the stick and within seconds got blown up! NRG won the battle, winning the first big World of Warplanes tournament 3:2! Congratulations!
So, summing everything up, there were some amazing battles, and once again our players have proved that there are some insanely skilled pilots out there. Check out the table below for the top three Silver Wing champions!
