Pilots,
Here at World of Warplanes, one highlight follows the next. After celebrating rocketeers all over the world in our last special, this week we’d like to celebrate the Irish and the Irish-at-heart worldwide. Naturally, as a historical aviation game, we want to use this opportunity to pay special tribute to the Irish pilots who distinguished themselves during their service in both great wars of the last century. Despite not having had their own major air force, there were at least 37 confirmed Irish aces in WWI and at least 13 Irish ace pilots in WWII. Their heroics in their own branch of the Royal Flying Corps or in the British RAF, where the majority of Irish pilots served during the famous Battle of Britain, shall be in our memories as we celebrate with all of you today.
Take a look at what Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, has brought for his special:
Triple XP for the first victory with each plane
Just like the three-leaf clover, we thought that three-fold experience would be a great way to decorate our Saint Patrick’s Day celebration.

It might not be obvious at first, but St Patrick’s Day has links to World of Warplanes in more ways than one. Although the Republic of Ireland maintained its status as a neutral party throughout World War II, the war in the air would impact the nation on many occasions. Ireland experienced German air raids, possibly due to mistakes made by bombers overshooting their targets in Great Britain, and it opened some of its airspace to the RAF. The country even leant some spare aircraft during the conflict and played host to many planes forced into landing on its shores.
Despite the nation’s official neutral stance, some Irish pilots felt strongly enough about the war to leave Ireland and form allegiances. One particular pilot, Brendan “Paddy” Finucane, was a flying ace of the highest order, reputedly taking out around 28 German aircraft during his service with the RAF before being taken out himself after a raid in July, 1942. For those that don't know, Paddy is the short form of the name Patrick.
After World War II, the need for a competent, modern air force was not lost on Ireland. The Irish Air Corps, originally founded in 1922, expanded with age. The fleet of biplanes and older aircraft was updated with the initial acquisition of Hurricanes and Spitfires. The Corps has operated throughout the 20th century to the present day, often in a search and rescue role, maintaining a presence during the troubles in Northern Ireland and more recently in Libya.
Take off into the green skies, pilots!
