Pilots,
Nowadays, crossing an ocean by plane seems like an everyday kind-of-thing, but there was a time when such an endeavour was considered the most daring of aviation feats imaginable. This week, we want to pay tribute to the crew of the flying boat Curtiss NC-4, who, on 27 May 1919, became the first people to traverse the Atlantic in an aircraft.
Their perilous flight began on 8 May in New York in a wing of two other aircraft, and led them to multiple stations from Massachusetts, to Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, the Azores islands and ultimately to Lisbon in Portugal. Although the impressive achievement was trumped somewhat by the first non-stop transatlantic flight merely two weeks later, the first ever flight across the ocean still has its place in the history of aviation, which is why we’re holding a neat little special in its honour today.
