The outcome of the Battle of Midway and the Soviet victory against the Axis at Stalingrad are believed by many historians to be the two most important events that turned the tide of WWII. The clash between U.S. and Japanese forces around the Midway Atoll from 4-7 June 1942 was supposed to be the final strike - after Pearl Harbor - that would devastate the American Navy. Instead, it turned into a comeback win for the Allies, who were able to convincingly defeat the IJN, sinking four of its carriers, destroying their entire aircraft support and inflicting irreparable damage to the Japanese’s capability to replenish their forces.
