This year, February 19^th marks the 70^th Anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima, one of the most famous and brutal encounters between the United States of America and the Empire of Japan during WWII. The eponymous island just south of the Japanese mainland became the setting of a 35-day engagement, pitting over 70,000 U.S. soldiers against some hopelessly outnumbered but ever-so-strongly defiant Japanese defenders. Although the outcome of the battle was never in doubt, due largely to the U.S.’s unbroken total air superiority over the island, ‘Operation Detachment’ (the codename for the battle), is still remembered as one of the most glorified examples of amphibian warfare that WWII has ever produced.
