The latest Silver Wing tournament before the official release of World of Warplanes was full of surprises! If you missed this great four hour show, the video is available on our eSports twitch.tv channel.
However, as we know that not all of you have that much time, we’ve written a short recap of the event. To follow it, take a look at the tournament bracket. Enjoy!
The opening match between Trust us – we are engineers (TU) and Spanish Fly (SF) was at a great show of destruction using heavy fighters which utilised their amazing firepower. The first game went to SF. The second game triggered a disturbing ‘deja vu’ feeling and again went decisively to SF, giving them a great win for the match!
After the first game, we managed to a hold of Greyshark, who pointed out that the TU made the mistake of concentrating fire while SF spread their high firepower across multiple targets and piled straight into a dogfight. He also expressed the opinion that the superiority of Heavy Fighters over Fighters can best be seen when comparing “Boom and Zoom” and “Turn and Burn” tactics. According to SF, the Turn and Burn tactic is less effective in tournaments.
The ‘Raspberry Tart Appreciation Stream’ continued during the second match with Just For Fun (JFF) playing against Four Cups of Warm Lard (FCWL). The first game started with FCWL stalling above their base, something that wasn’t the most sound tactic and led to their swift demise. For the second battle, JFF were a little overconfident and lost the battle. The final battle started slowly as both teams gained altitude and clashed high above the clouds. The match went cleanly to JFF!
The third match of the day was played between Pixyl’s Praetorians (PP), the victors of the last edition of this tournament, and Zero Wing (ZW), who are also well-known veterans of the World of Warplanes skies. The first game went smoothly to PP, followed closely by the second game which again went to the favourites! PP once again made it to the grand final!
Interview time came again, this time with ExtincE. He expressed his happiness at the victory and commented on his team’s great comeback. He also explained the differences between the currently available Tier IV heavy fighters.
The next match on the stream was Guys Who Dated Your Sister (GWDYS) fighting against Spanish Fly (SF). The first battle was the fastest engagement seen on the stream, with GWDYS victorious. The second battle wasn’t as fast or one-sided, but gave GWDYS a 2:0 victory in this match!
We managed to get in touch with sextus_cz from GWDYS right before their next match. He explained that they are still trying different tactics and stated that they are training very hard. They are really determined to get further after their first loss against Zero Wing, which dropped them into the loser’s bracket. He highlighted the importance of tactics and team play, especially against more experienced opponents in the tournament. He also wanted to publicly thank their wives, who tolerate the amount of time they are playing!
The last loser’s bracket match was between Zero Wing and Guys Who Dated Your Sister and would determine who would face the Silver Wing champions, Pixyl’s Praetorians (PP). The first game went to GWDYS decisively, showing their amazing coordination and the effectiveness of flying in keys. The second game went even better for GWDYS, who completely demolished the ZW team, taking their revenge for the battle lost against them earlier!
In the finals, Guys Who Dated Your Sister faced the so far unbeaten Silver Wing champions, Pixyl’s Praetorians! The first battle started slowly, with PP taking down two ground targets and gaining a slight superiority advantage. The dogfight started in favour of PP, dropping to a 3:1 situation, which GWDYS didn’t manage to recover from. The first game went to PP!
The second battle showcased a surprising strategy, rarely seen in tournaments, with GWDYS hugging the map boarder and sticking really close together. The tactic appeared to work well, pushing PP into a corner, with the engagement taking place on GWDYS rules and blowing PP up 4:0!
The third battle wasn’t as decisive, with planes on both sides dishing out damage effectively. Again, GWDYS were slightly bruised but stood tall at the end of the battle. The score of the match was now 2:1!
The fourth battle took place in the middle of the map, with the teams meeting high above the clouds. After the engagement and first run, the teams were left with two planes for PP and just ExtincE for GWDYS. He managed to change the situation to 1 vs. 1 and fled to destroy a ground target. PP dropped the ball and the match finished with a 3:1 victory for GWDYS!
As PP hadn’t lost a single game (as opposed to GWDYS who had come through the loser’s bracket), the rules granted them a bonus Bo5 rematch! This situation was a first, and so PP’s title of Ultimate Silver Wing Champion was put to the ultimate test.
The first battle was quickly decided after the first fly-by, and GWDYS ended up victorious with three planes left!
The second battle was equally one-sided. Just seconds after the engagement started, PP were left in a bad 1 vs. 3 situation from which they didn’t manage to recover. The match score went up to 2:0!
The third battle started with both teams burning engines to get as high as possible. The first spot went to GWDYS, which gave them a slight advantage. After the first passing, the situation looked to be more to the advantage of PP, but just seconds later GWDYS stepped up their game and won the match 3:0!
The first Silver Wing in which Pixyl’s Praetorians lost came to an end, with the champion title going to Guys Who Dated Your Sister! Congratulations!
Right after the match, we got ExtincE to comment for us again. Breath-taking happiness filled the stream as we connected. According to him, they were lucky and managed to achieve their greatest success so far. At the end they concentrated fire and kept in line, which allowed all their planes to fire at the exact same moment, maximising alpha damage. In his opinion, PP were possibly more experienced but didn’t concentrate fire as effectively, which cost them their title. ExtincE congratulated PP and thanked everyone who worked hard to make this happen.
PP showed class and acknowledged that the title was well earned by GWDYS and congratulated them on their victory.
Congratulations once again and see you after release in the next Silver Wing tournament!
