After World War II, Boeing B-29 bombers were adapted as "motherships" for research aircraft designed to be lightweight and compact escort fighters and protect future long-range USAF bombers from enemy attacks. In particular, the Superfortress was the primary testing platform for a unique XF-85 project developed specifically as a parasite fighter that would deploy from the bomb bay when needed.
