And Lavochkin Was Born…

On 11 September 1900, a Soviet aircraft pioneer was born in Smolyensk. From combat experiences in the Spanish Civil War and the Battles of Khalkhin Gol, he realised an overhaul was needed for Soviet fighters, as their designs were lagging behind other nations’ air forces. This lead to him founding his own design bureau in 1939.
