Although World of Warplanes is now in Open Beta, not everybody has yet had the chance to try it at home. Some people came by our gamescom booth to get their first impression of World War II aviation magic. Two such newcomers were Lisa and Philipp, who both discovered the game for the first time during one of their multiple visits to the Wargaming stand. We caught up with them after their first play-through to ask them for feedback and get to know how they liked the game. Find out what they had to say in the interview below!
Lisa, you just tried World of Warplanes for the first time. What’s your first impression about it?
It’s a very good game and a lot of fun. I’m a glider pilot myself in real life, so I was curious to see an aviation game being shown here at the Wargaming stand. I loved the fact that there were joysticks at hand to play the game in style. I’m so much more precise with it – to me it feels more natural to steer a plane that way.
What nations/planes did you fly during your session just now?
I didn’t concentrate on just one nation. I wanted to try them all. Same goes for the planes. It was fun to compare the performance of an old bi-plane from the lower tiers to the power of a jet from the top of the tree. Jet planes are so much more agile and fast. I love this playstyle.
Have you played Wargaming games before?
Not really. I’m not too much into tanks, but when I saw that there was a game with planes, I immediately got interested. Although I must admit that both games look stunning, now that I think about it. Planes are my personal preference though.
Lisa and Philipp discovering the game… | Lisa likes the fast jets. Here she zooms with it over the blue ocean of Pacific. |
Time to queue up for a goodie bag. No Wargaming visit is complete without it. | Both seem to have liked it. Hope to see you soon in the game again, Lisa and Philipp! |
We see you scored a goodie bag. Which item from it do you like the most?
The little synthetic model of the Japanese fighter plane. I’m going to assemble it at home and let it fly. Oh, and the t-shirt of course. I even got it in the right size! Thanks!
Philipp, what did you think of your playing session?
Normally I’m not an aviation game fan. However, I am a long-time Wargaming supporter and World of Tanks player, where I’ve amassed a nice number of battles. I visited the booth last year and had to come again when I saw that Wargaming was back with another stand. This time, World of Warplanes looked more appealing to me so I tried it. It was a little unusual at first for me because I’m more familiar with the slower World of Tanks-like gameplay. I did enjoy it though and I think I’ll give it another shot when I come home.
Did you manage to score some take-downs during your flight?
Not at first. But with time, I got the hang of it and became more prolific. The first couple of rounds I had to figure things out at first – mostly by watching how other people behaved. I also tried a couple of the control options to find out which one I’d prefer. The joystick is my favourite too. I think it’s most fun to play like a real pilot.
What do you guys think of our Wargaming booth?
The Wargaming booth is always worth visiting when one is at gamescom. As far as we can see, the show here is pretty unique on the entire convention ground. The dancers last year were great, and this year they’re even more over the top with the air acrobatics that happen right on stage. We came by twice already just to catch it and to see it once again from more up close.
Thanks for the Interview and have a nice gamescom!
