In June 1940, Nazi Germany had invaded most of Western Europe and Scandinavia. Only Britain and the Commonwealth still resisted the domination of the Wehrmacht throughout Europe. When he realized that the British would not accept threats to Germany, Hitler decided to launch military action to break the will and the defense of Britain.

The first phase, which began in July 1940, involved frequent attacks on convoys English Royal Navy, through submarines and bombers. The objective was to force the enemy to redirect its convoys north-eastern Britain. A month later, during the operation of the eagle attack , the Luftwaffe was commissioned to gain air superiority over the English Channel to launch a future amphibious invasion, codenamed "  Operation Sealion " (Operation Sea Lion ).

That is why the Germans abandoned Operation Sea Lion completely and chose the famous strategy of Blitz , a campaign night and tactical bombardment that lasted until May 1941 and eventually fail.
