Tournaments in World of Warplanes are played in various formats. The possibilities are endless, from 3 vs 3, to 14 vs 14. Planes are very well-balanced as well, which leaves a lot of options for fighting on various tiers, basically making the entire I-X spectrum available for tournament use.
There are certain tournament formats that are more common than others. Typically, World of Warplanes tournaments are played in a 4 vs 4 or 6 vs 6 format using tier IV or tier VI aircraft. We are however not limited to this tournament format and on occasion you’ll see different tiers and team sizes being played. Thanks to the good balance of planes within the same tier we are able to make tournaments of virtually any tier.
The optimal team size is four or six players
The number of players strongly influences the tactics, plane choices and how easy it is to gather a team. After conducting a series of tests and analysing general plane and player performance in all possible conditions, it was decided that the 4 vs 4 and 6 vs 6 tournaments are just the most fun. With less than 4 players in the air, the huge maps seem empty and the tactics available for use are highly limited. With more than 6 people per team, it starts to get hard to gather a team and the battles become hectic, again limiting strategies. It doesn’t mean that all tournaments will be played only in these two formats, but definitely they will be most popular, unless future changes in game mechanics make us revise these rules and implement some optimisation.
Most tournaments are focused around tier IV and VI planes
It was relatively easy to choose the plane tiers, as it appears that tier IV and VI planes are basically the most fun to play and make the best show! Lower tier planes are great fun but don’t offer as much variety, while higher tier planes are simply too fast to make it a good show on the maps of the currently available size. Possibly when bigger maps are introduced, tier VII or VIII tournaments will be created. It is also possible that in the more distant future we’ll implement tier X tournaments as a regular thing.
Battles in World of Warplanes are dynamic engagements lasting from several seconds to a couple of minutes
Because planes are much faster, more fragile and have almost no place to effectively hide once they are detected, battles finish far faster in World of Warplanes than in World of Tanks. This is a very important part of World of Warplanes – due to the nature of airplanes, it’s impossible to utilise camping tactics. It is possible to stall, try to run, etc., but physics will never allow you to stop mid-air. Once the battle starts, get ready to put your tactics in place and do your best!
Win Gold, premium time, fame and on top of that, other tremendous prizes
It’s not uncommon for tournament winners to walk away with several thousand Gold in their pockets, as well as premium time. That however is not everything you can win in tournaments. Occasionally you can also win gaming hardware and various goodies from Wargaming, as well as tournament sponsors. On top of that, winning tournaments gives you what every player wants when his previous needs were satisfied – the level of recognition that puts you on a par with champions of unquestioned skills!
